iCM Forum's Favourite Films from Central Europe

Posted Image

We're using a very narrow view of Central Europe for this poll: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary. These countries are roughly equal in output, so hopefully we'll also see some equal distribution in the results.

Czechoslovakia + Czech Republic, + Slovakia: 3,445 (2,446 + 821 + 178) films on imdb
Hungary: 2,725
Poland: 2,453

Other countries often/sometimes included in Central Europe - Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are already covered by the German-language (and French-language) polls on the forum. Slovenia, Croatia, and Romania were just included in the Balkans poll.

Films are also eligible based on primary language, if they're from a neighbouring country. This means that a Hungarian film made in Romania, or a Sorbian film made in Germany, would be eligible (if they exist), as those countries have significant or historical populations of Hungarians and West Slavs.

The rules
· Films, mini-series, tv anthology series with unrelated episodes are all allowed
· List can be on imdb or icm
· Fully ranked or unranked lists only (will be considered ranked unless specified)
· Half-life will be 50, unless the lists are consistently longer then I'll consider raising it
· I'm aiming to have a top 250, but it will depend on how many submissions there are; top 100 for sure

Deadline for submissions
Sunday, April 17th, midnight Hawaiian Time - I'm on vacation with my mom until the 14th, so I'll give everyone until the end of the weekend to get their lists in, so that I can post the results before the end of the month.

Helpful Lists
Central Europe

Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic, & Slovakia

Hungary

Poland

Always difficult to determine which movies are from a certain country......

Going through Poland right now and of course there are many Kieslowski movies showing up among my 8+ ratings. But some are more Polish than others.
I'll include La Double Vie de Veronique and Trois Couleurs: Blanc, but I'll leave out Bleu and Rouge. The first two are clearly partly Polish, not only because of the director, but also because of the story and actors. Bleu and Rouge seem completely French to me.

I don't know. I guess you could argue that it's a "tv anthology series with unrelated episodes" (63 separate stories/adventures of Krecik, created over the course of 45 years). It's too good not to include it for me - it's one of my few great childhood memories and feelings.

Borat?
A bit of Polish language make them Polish?

Der Himmel über Berlin?

I don't see how these could be from any of those countries.

Can you please stop about Sterne. That's clearly a mixed production. If he can explain the same about Himmel, Andalou and Voyage I'm fine with it. I can't see how he could actually.

Close but no cigar. A handful of Czech films with a sprinkling of Michael Curtiz do not a proper A-H list make. :hmph:

I was hoping I wouldn't have to do this, but I guess as host of the poll it's up to me to declare what is eligible and what is not? I'll go through each list and let y'all know. I'll just exclude them from the results when I do the calculations.

Not that these films belong to this very challenge, but Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Vojvodina used to belonge to AH Empire until its break-up. That means this list should include films of Karol Grossmann, Arsen Maas, Arnost Grund & Vladimir Totović. The latter was even drafted as AH soldier which put an end to his life as well as filmmaking career.

Yeah, me neither but they are in the Magic Realism Cinema in East Central Europe list. I didn't notice Fergenaprido's qualifier that some movies are eligible. Maybe should have involved my brain while compiling.

I searched through the history of early Romanian cinema, too. Films made in Transylvania, the part that belonged to AH at the time:
Cox şi Box (1912) (made in Cluj, not on IMDb)
Păpușa (1912) (made in Brasov, not on IMDb)
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/leanyfurfang/
https://www.icheckmovies.com/movies/ejfeli+talalkozas/ (both made in Cluj, wrongly entitled to Hungary on IMDb)
