1. Moana (2016)

OK. Bias revealing time: I don't really like animation. There are plenty of exceptions, but it's a genre I tend to avoid. I like the challenges because they get me out of my comfort zone and force me to explore genres/areas of film I wouldn't on my own. So I'm looking forward to this challenge to try and discover some great new animated films... and Moana was not one. The non-human animation was superb, and having a story from Polynesian culture is great. But the story is kinda boring and the songs do nothing for me. But I have much better films lined up for this challenge.

@Simba63: Temporary congrats (until you lose those platinums again with the IMDB list bouncing)!

1. Koshka, kotoraya gulyala sama po sebe / the cat that walked by herself (USSR 88)
Animation quite stunning, but it did get tedious after awhile. Have to reread the Kipling story (not one of my childhood favorites).

2. Leap! (Fr 16)
I was so annoyed at the dubbing that I muted it for awhile and read the subs, until the music became too important.

3. Waltz with Bashir (2008)

This was really interesting - though to be honest, I would not have known it was a documentary unless I were told so. I think I would appreciate this more if I knew more about the war it depicted, and some of the specifics as well. I saw a lot of influence of this on Tower (2016), though that might be just my lack of familiarity with animated documentaries.

4. Inside Out (2015)

I went into this one with high expectations, as I had repeatedly seen it compared to Monsters Inc., one of my very favorite animated movies. And I have to say, my expectations were met - I thought this was fantastic and an instant favorite. There was a lot to like about it - the general scientific ideals were sound, the feelingsness of it came through well without being too overbearing, and it was a sweet simple story that played out well. I think it was better geared toward adults than children, but still had a great message. And just a shout-out to the people who decided to make her hockey tryouts uniform maroon and gold, the colors of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.

I'm in for a few.

1. Gandahar (1988) 7/10
I know I saw this one countless times when I was a kid. They were lots of scenes that rang a bell and reminded me of my childhood. Although I'm sure I didn't understood back then what was going on.

2. When the Wind Blows (1986) 7/10
I loved the mix of stop-motion and animation.

It does deal with time travelling and paradoxes, and it can get pretty confusing at times, but I think I understand this time. Great film overall.

Do we have an anime expert around here to explain the Macross thing to me?

There are 2 Macross movies on the anime list. The one from 1984 which is based on a series but it doesn't look the same, do I need to watch the series?
The second one is Macross Plus from 1995 which is weird because it's a 120 compilation video of a 140 minute series. Do I watch the series or the movie (or both)?

The movie (Do You Remember Love?) is a re-telling of the original series, Super Dimension Fortress Macross. If I remember correctly, it's completely re-done, not like they just re-edited the tv material. Slightly spoilers but nothing too serious and it doesn't matter if you haven't seen the original series, the film DYRL has a completely different ending from the series. After the original series aired they wanted to do some alt-universe spin-offs which included DYRL and Macross II (itself being a further spin-off of DYRL, but being made by a completely different studio and ultimately unrelated to the Macross franchise as a whole), but from Macross 7 on, DYRL is the preferred canon source, and the ending is referenced pretty heavily in the later series. The character Lynn goes from being an idol to an idol, if you get what I mean, worshiped by all subsequent main characters. Macross Plus was the fourth entry in the series and was originally a 4-ep OVA, and then when the Macross 7 film was released theatrically they re-edited the Macross Plus material into a film, with some new material and some stuff removed. While the film version is the original 'length' they intended, it lacks the OVA's pacing. Completionists watch both but it's not necessary.

So to briefly answer both of your questions: No, just watch the film, although know it'll be seem pretty rushed as it's a two hour version of a 36 episode series, and just watch the original 4 ep OVA of Macross Plus.

And for anyone wanting a what-to-watch list for Macross, here goes:
1. Super Dimensional Fortess Macross (35eps) OR Macross: Do You Remember Love?
(see note above)

2. Skip Macross II, it's garbage.
(But if you have to watch it, make sure you've seen DYRL? as it's a (distant) sequel to its ending and not SDF Macross)

3. I completely forgot to put Macross Plus here despite the post being about it. numbers now adjusted.

4. Macross 7 [tv, 49 ep]
It's a bit of a mess and is focused more heavily on the music aspect of Macross than the space opera/mecha side of things but subsequent tv series follow its format. If you enjoyed it, then follow the subsections for 4. if you did not, skip to 5.
4a. Macross 7: Ginga ga Ore o Yonde Iru! [film]
4b. Macross 7 Encore [3 ep OVA]
4c. Macross Dynamite 7 [4 ep OVA]

5. Macross Zero [5 ep OVA]
Probably the 'best Macross series, but takes itself very seriously. Prequel to SDF Macross (aka entry 1. of this list)

6. Macross Frontier [TV, 25 ep]
If you really liked the characters and would like a half-baked re-hashing of this very same series, see 6a. if not, skip to 7.
6a. Gekijouban Macross F: Itsuwari no Utahime and Gekijouban Macross F: Sayonara no Tsubasa.
Two film re-edit/re-sequencing of Macross Frontier. Should not be used as an alternative to watching Macross Frontier. And if you really, really can't get enough of both Frontier and 7, go to 5b.
6b. Macross FB7: Ore no Uta o Kike!
Frontier and 7 cross-over/re-edit of the whole 7 storyline with new songs and shoe-horning the shiny new Frontier characters in, bringing the Macross series to peak-cash cow levels.
6c and 5d. Nyankuri and Gooorgeous
two music videos featuring the Frontier characters because why the fuck not.

7. Macross Delta [TV, 26 eps]
Not as terrible as people make it out to be, but you have to at least have a slight interest, even perversely/ironically, in both idol groups and fishcats. (They peak-meming by this point) Also surprisingly good at referencing the whole mythology/world-building of the franchise.

8. Wait for Macross (2018)

(edit: also, I forgot to mention I skipped Flash Back 2012 and Macross XX as they're not worth anyone's time. The first is a half-hour music video compilation and the second is a CG tech demo)

1. La tortue rouge (2016)
A bittersweet, wordless tone poem fairytale produced by Studio Ghibli with a French director at the helm, The Red Turtle is a languidly paced film that will stay with you for a while after its over.

2. Futari Ecchi (2000) a.k.a. Step Up Love Story
The box art made this look like a slice-of-life comedy about some newlyweds navigating the ins and outs of marriage. Instead, its an at times tender and at times graphically raunchy borderline hentai about a newly married couple's exploration of sex. Better than it should be but the soft porn elements actually hinder its character growth.

3. The Emoji Movie (2017)
Trash movie with a poorly written script that barely makes sense, is relentlessly unfunny and plays out like one long commercial with a total waste of a solid voice cast.

4. Kono sekai no katasumi ni (2016) a.k.a. In This Corner of the World
A heartbreaking film that explores a somewhat different perspective of a rural village near Hiroshima during WWII. The admittedly too-drawn out early bits of the film and their depictions of everyday life act as a dramatic counterpoint to the horrors of war once the shelling begins. While not without flaws, it is beautifully drawn and memorable.

5. Koe no katachi (2016) a.k.a. A Silent Voice
While Your Name got all the attention this past year, A Silent Voice is another great film worthy of attention full of complex characters, quietly cruel moments of sadness and a sense of fulfillment that few movies, animated or not, reach. If it has any flaws it's that it teeters too close to the saccharin a couple of times.

6a. UFO robo: Gurendaizâ (1975)
Dorky fighting robot OVA from the 70's. If you've seen stuff like Mazinger Z then you know what to expect. Also look out for hero Duke Fleed's total boss ED theme!

6b. Candy Candy: The Movie (1992)
This OVA is the visual equivalent of a delicate teacup and is just as interesting to look at.... -_-

6c. Grim (1985)
Bizarre stop motion short of an apartment haunted by a spirit.

7. Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)
I quite liked this Elseworlds DC animated flick. Having read the graphic novel and not caring about the sanctity of the original characters like some hardcore comic nerds who have been raging out about this movie do, I appreciated their fresh take on the mystery of who the Jack the Ripper prowling the streets of Gotham could be.

in that case, I change my recommendation for iCMers to the film version. there really isn't that much of a difference, that I remember.
They're fairly similar. I prefered the OVA a little over the movie but it's not that big of a deal.
