Jungfrukällan [The Virgin Spring] (1960), Ingmar Bergman
I've never been crazy about Bergman's stuff, but always kept watching more because his films are important, historically, right? Along with The Seventh Seal, this ended up being my favorite of his. Vengeance as a theme has always been something I was drawn to. The film isn't about vengeance per se, but how ideological people deal with situations that make them question their ideology; in the case of this film, extremely religious man taking justice into his own hands. It's a grim tale that offers a lot of material to think about.
The Seventh Seal was a disappointment for me on a rewatch. The Virgin Spring was still a favorite, just outside my top 100. Not my favorite Bergman though. Persona is easily the best.
